Silverfish v3 Miner – Fan Mod

The v3 Silverfish was the quietest Silver fish they did, mainly due to the fact they decided to enclose the unit in a tube of sorts. This created the first “nice” looking miner on the market but still not quiet enough for the wife to allow one in the front room/lounge

One of the best features of the Silverfish and this is something I have yet to come across again, if the miner got to hot it would automatically reduce the clock speed. This meant that a variable fan could be fitted to reduce fan speed and noise but intern would cause the miner to heat up. Not a problem for the Silverfish as it would throttle the clock speed down from 30Mh/s to 20Mh/s at the same time reducing the power consumption. Amazing feature that we need to see on more miners!

Silver fish with the Stock fan was loud at 79.6dB

After fitting a Noctua 120mm Fan – 70.5 dB with 475 watt power consumption

Noctua Fan on slow Fan speed – 54.0dB with 266 watt power consumption

So, apart from a Noctua 12mm fan, what else did I do. Well I removed the case and inserted into the fan wiring loop a Zalman Fan Mate 2 Variable Fan Speed Controller. This connected up with no issues and with the aid of some tape I fixed to the outside of the tube. This way if we needed quite time to watch the TV we could reduce the fan down and the miner would be practically silent.
